Internships for Credit

Plan Ahead

At this time, we are assuming that it will be possible for students to do internships for credit. Please have a backup plan for other summer classes in case things change.

About the Process

Internships are valuable, relevant experiences that can lead to a full time job or job opportunities. We advise students to have at least one internship, even if it is not for academic credit. Business students at Appalachian can earn class credit for completing an internship that meets the required criteria. In order to receive class credit for your internship, you must be:

  • a Junior
  • admitted into the Walker College of Business
  • in good academic standing
  • completing a 40 hour per week internship that lasts at least 10 weeks (for 6 hour internships)
  • completing an internship in your major
  • completing an internship that fits within the summer session date range (See Internship for Credit Checklist for current dates)

Your contract must be turned in to Business Career Services at least 5 business days prior to your start date. You must be registered for your internship before you begin working. The last day to turn in an internship contract is by 12 noon on the drop/add date.

For International internships, students must complete online forms at OIED's website. Students must meet with OIED at least three weeks prior to their departure date or before the Drop/Add deadline (whichever comes first) in order to complete OIED requirements.

Can I take courses during an internship?
Students may not register for an internship and additional coursework without permission from the faculty internship advisor and the internship supervisor.

State Authorization: Some states may have restrictions on internships for credit (CO, SC). Please  talk to your internship advisor if you hope to complete an internship out-of-state.
